About Us
About Us
Since 2013, we have been roasting specialty coffee in small batches at our family-owned roastery in the foothills of Pennsylvania's Pocono Mountains.
Each of our coffees is the result of a meticulous and conscientious journey. Sourced from the finest smallholder farms and cooperatives, our exclusive offerings possess distinctive, engaging characteristics, drawn out through our small batch roasting process.
Our coffee philosophy is tied together with our emphasis on sustainable, ethical sourcing and general business practices. We approach this holistically and recognize our role in our local and global communities.
We're passionate about coffee and the conversations that happen over it. The late nights, early mornings, and moments in between. Coffee is about community; it’s about adventure; it’s about embarking on an engaging sensory experience that satisfies your body and mind.
Join us on a journey to heighten your coffee experience.
Beyond Coffee
Passionate about more than just the perfect roast, we actively work to make a positive impact in our wider community in various ways. Here are some examples of how we operate beyond the world of coffee:
– Each year, we give 1% of our gross annual sales to vetted environmental nonprofits through our partnership with 1% for the Planet.
– Through monetary, in-kind, and volunteer time contributions, we support other nonprofit organizations (local schools, animal shelters, wildlife refuges, and more).
– Even our coffee chaff is donated to local gardeners and farms for uses like composting and mulching! Coffee chaff is the light, fluffy skin that comes off the beans during the roasting process. It's a natural byproduct that's rich in valuable nutrients that can enrich soil and promote plant growth.
– We take an intentional approach to how we source all of our materials and equipment. Nearly everything we procure is from American companies, with special preference for local providers.
Behind the Name
Mauch Chunk, now known as Jim Thorpe, is a small, picturesque town nestled in the Lehigh Valley, within the scenic Pocono Mountains (Poconos) of Pennsylvania. Today, it is known for its well-preserved Victorian architecture, outdoor adventure activities, and rich history, dating back to the early 19th century.
Before European settlers arrived, the area was inhabited by the indigenous Lenni Lenape people. "Mauch Chunk" is derived from the Lenape phrase "Mawsch Unk," which translates to "Bear Mountain" or "Sleeping Bear," referring to the shape of a nearby mountain.
Specialty Coffee
Mauch Chunk Coffee Company is built on a recognition of the significance of understanding and respecting the origin story imprinted on each bean - the tireless labor, the intricate artistry, and the passion invested in every batch.
Coffee quality is assessed on a rigorous 100-point grading system, with specialty coffee earning 80 points or more. It reflects an uncompromising commitment to excellence at every stage in the process - from the meticulous selection of the finest coffee cherries, through careful processing and precise roasting.
Despite the omnipresence of coffee in our lives, authentic specialty coffee remains a rare delight.
