Why We
Started
Mauch Chunk Coffee Company began in 2013 with a love for coffee and a belief in its ability to bring people together. We set out to pair thoughtfully roasted coffees with a larger purpose: helping create more opportunities for people to gather and connect.
Coffeehouses have served as gathering places for centuries—settings for conversation, exchange, and belonging. Places like these are often called “third places”: spaces beyond home and work where people meet, linger, and form connections.
That idea still guides us. The name Mauch Chunk reflects the history of this region, while our coffees carry the work and character of communities around the world. Wherever they are served, our aim is the same: to make coffee worthy of the moment being shared.

Exceptional coffee begins with distinctive quality at origin. We carefully select coffees for their clarity, character, and sense of place, then develop each roast to reveal what makes it remarkable.
Distinctive at Origin
Long before coffee reaches our roastery, skilled growers have already shaped it. We select coffees that express their terroir, variety, and processing—the foundations of their distinctive character in the cup.
Roasted with Intention
Since 2013, we have roasted coffee in small batches at our family-owned roastery in the Pocono Mountains. Each profile is tailored to the coffee itself, with the goal of achieving balance and preserving its character.
Naturally Expressive
Tasting notes describe aromas and flavors that occur naturally in the cup—they are never added ingredients. Every coffee we roast is 100% Arabica, with no flavorings or additives.
Beyond Coffee
Our responsibilities extend beyond the coffee we roast. We put that belief into practice through environmental giving, community support, waste reduction, and thoughtful purchasing.
1% for the Planet
Through our partnership with 1% for the Planet, we give 1% of annual sales—not profits—to vetted environmental nonprofits.
Community Support
We support local schools, animal shelters, wildlife refuges, and other nonprofits through financial contributions, donated goods, and volunteer time.
Waste Reduction
Coffee roasting produces a papery byproduct called chaff. We donate ours to local gardeners and farms for composting and mulching, keeping it out of the waste stream.
Local & U.S. Suppliers
Whenever practical, we source our packaging, equipment, and operating supplies from U.S. companies, with preference for local providers.
Behind the Name
Mauch Chunk, now known as Jim Thorpe, is a small, picturesque town nestled in the Lehigh Valley, within the scenic Pocono Mountains of Pennsylvania. Today, it is known for its well-preserved Victorian architecture, outdoor adventure activities, and rich history, dating back to the early 19th century.
Before European settlement, the area was home to the Lenape people. "Mauch Chunk" is derived from the Lenape phrase "Mawsch Unk," which translates to "Bear Mountain" or "Sleeping Bear," referring to the shape of a nearby mountain.
