Our Namesake & History

From Mauch Chunk to Jim Thorpe: 1818 to Today

The name Mauch Chunk comes from the Munsee-Delaware term for 'Bear Mountain,' the ridge overlooking the Lehigh River bend. Mauch Chunk was founded in 1818 by industrial pioneers Josiah White and Erskine Hazard along a steep gorge of the Lehigh River. The historic district was built directly into the canyon floor, with 19th-century stone and brick buildings lining Broadway and Race Street below steep mountain ridges. During the 19th century, Mauch Chunk grew into one of Pennsylvania's primary anthracite shipping ports, connecting coal mines in the upper hills to Philadelphia via the Lehigh Canal and river barges.

In 1827, the Lehigh Coal & Navigation Company constructed the Switchback Gravity Railroad to transport coal nine miles from the mines in Summit Hill down to the canal chutes in Mauch Chunk. It was one of the earliest railroads built in the United States, using gravity on the downhill run and mules on the return until steam-powered inclined planes were installed in 1844. In the 1870s, after coal traffic shifted to newer locomotive lines, the Switchback was converted into a passenger excursion line, becoming one of America's earliest scenic rail attractions.

In 1954, the boroughs of Mauch Chunk and East Mauch Chunk merged and took the name Jim Thorpe in honor of the Olympic gold medalist. We keep the town's original 1818 name on our bags to honor two centuries of local trade, engineering, and manufacturing in this valley. We approach coffee roasting with that same practical focus on consistency and process control, monitoring temperature curves, airflow, and bean development to bring out the natural sweetness in every batch.

Carbon County: Lehighton & the Mahoning Valley

Four miles south of Jim Thorpe along Route 209, Lehighton and Weissport offer open valley land and river history. The preserved canal locks and towpath in Weissport are part of the historic trade route that moved raw anthracite south toward Easton and Philadelphia.

You can walk the level towpath trail along the Weissport Canal, or drive west into the Mahoning Valley to watch classic films on the 35mm outdoor screen at the Mahoning Drive-In Theater on Seneca Road. We supply fresh roasts to diners, retail shops, and residents across Lehighton, Weissport, and the Mahoning Valley every week.

Specialty Coffee in Jim Thorpe

The Standard of Excellence

Exceptional coffee begins with distinctive quality at origin. We carefully select coffees for their clarity, character, and sense of place, then develop each roast to reveal what makes it remarkable.

Distinctive at Origin

Long before coffee reaches our roastery, skilled growers have already shaped it. We select coffees that express their terroir, variety, and processing—the foundations of their distinctive character in the cup.

Roasted with Intention

Since 2013, we have roasted coffee in small batches at our family-owned roastery in the Pocono Mountains. Each profile is tailored to the coffee itself, with the goal of achieving balance and preserving its character.

Naturally Expressive

Tasting notes describe aromas and flavors that occur naturally in the cup—they are never added ingredients. Every coffee we roast is 100% Arabica, with no flavorings or additives.
