The Industrial Legacy of Asa Packer
Born in Connecticut in 1805, Asa Packer arrived in Mauch Chunk as a young carpenter’s apprentice with barely a dollar in his pocket. Through visionary ambition, he built canal boats to transport anthracite coal along the Lehigh River before making his fortune by founding the Lehigh Valley Railroad in 1855.
Packer’s rail network transformed Mauch Chunk into the premier coal transportation hub of northeastern Pennsylvania. In 1865, Packer established Lehigh University in Bethlehem with a historic $500,000 donation, solidifying his legacy as one of Pennsylvania’s greatest industrialists and philanthropists.
1861 Italianate Villa Architecture & Luxury
Designed by renowned Philadelphia architect Samuel Sloan, the 18-room mansion cost $14,000 to construct in 1861 — a staggering sum for the era. The exterior features sweeping wrap-around verandas, ornate bracketed eaves, and a central cupola commanding panoramic vistas of the Lehigh River gorge.

The 1912 Time Capsule Preservation
What makes the Asa Packer Mansion world-famous is its remarkable preservation. Following the passing of Asa’s daughter, Mary Packer Cummings, in 1912, her will bequeathed the entire estate, furnishings, and grounds to the Borough of Jim Thorpe to be preserved as a public monument.
The doors were locked, preserving the home as a pristine 1861 time capsule. When you walk through the estate today, you step directly into the 19th century — viewing the family’s personal books, clothing, china set for dinner, and original oil portraits exactly as they left them.
