Chemex Brewing Guide

Chemex coffee brewing guide

The Chemex is one of the most elegant and effective coffee brewing methods. With its distinctive hourglass shape and special bonded filters, it produces a remarkably clean and flavorful cup.

Chemex Recipe

Coffee 42g
Water 700ml
Ratio 1:16.7
Grind Medium-coarse
Temperature 200–205°F
Brew Time 4:00

What You’ll Need

  • Chemex brewer
  • Chemex bonded filters
  • 42g of freshly ground coffee
  • 700ml of water heated to 200–205°F
  • Gooseneck kettle (recommended)
  • Scale and timer

Step-by-Step Instructions

  1. Boil your water and let it cool slightly to between 200–205°F.
  2. Place the filter in the Chemex with the triple-fold facing the spout.
  3. Rinse the filter with hot water to remove any paper taste, then discard the rinse water.
  4. Add your ground coffee — it should be a medium-coarse grind, similar to sea salt.
  5. Bloom the grounds by pouring just enough water to saturate them (about 70ml). Wait 30–45 seconds.
  6. Continue pouring in slow, concentric circles, keeping the water level comfortably below the top of the filter.
  7. Total brew time should be about 4 minutes for 700ml of water.

Tips for the Best Cup

  • Always use freshly roasted, freshly ground coffee
  • The grind size matters — too fine and your coffee will be bitter, too coarse and it will be weak
  • Experiment with ratios to find your perfect strength

Enjoy your Chemex brew! It’s one of the cleanest, most nuanced ways to experience specialty coffee.
